While attic ventilation is primarily needed to keep the roof cool and dry in the summer, it also plays a key role in keeping your home warm and dry during these cold months. What Is Attic Ventilation For?
Warm and humid air naturally rises and gathers at the highest point of the building, which, in most cases, is the attic. Without vents to release it, trapped air in the attic can cause problems, such as damage to the timber that make up the roofing frame, clumping insulation, and condensation that results in mold growth, rot and corrosion.
This is where attic ventilation comes in. A standard sloped residential roofing system has vents at the highest point of the roof, which is usually located at the ridges. As warm air is released through these vents, it creates a difference in air pressure that pulls cool air through another set of vents located at the lowest points of the roof, which are usually at the soffits.
Attic Ventilation and the Winter Season
In addition to the problems described above, inadequate ventilation during the winter season presents another problem. Ice dams form when trapped heat in the attic raises the roof’s temperature, enough to melt the snow on top. As the meltwater flows towards the roof’s edge, it refreezes and eventually turns into a dam-shaped protrusion. Over time, ice dams can cause water infiltration, as well as damage the gutters as it becomes heavier.
Fortunately, addressing ventilation issues do not require a roof replacement. If standard ridge vents are not enough, additional vents can be installed by a capable roofer. Most roof vents are passive — that is, they rely on differences in air pressure to create airflow — but exhaust fans can also be installed if needed.
