Preventing Ice Dams With Roof Snow Removal

Freezing precipitation is not an unusual sight during the cold, frigid season of winter. For homeowners, keeping the roof clear of snow swiftly becomes the main concern. This practice can ward off pesky issues that are not only frustrating to deal with, but also costly to fix. Here’s how snow removal can prevent ice dams and other moisture-related problems.

What Are Ice Dams?

An ice dam is an ice buildup that typically appears on the edges of a roof. There are times when ice buildup is also seen around roof vents, skylights and valleys. Ice dams form due to insufficient insulation or ventilation in the attic space. The hot air in the attic causes the roofing material to heat up and melt the snow sitting on top of the roof. Once the water reaches the edge of the roof, it refreezes, creating ice dams.

Why Ice Dams Need to Be Addressed

It is crucial to quickly address ice dams since they can easily inflict damage on your shingles and eavestroughs. Ice can weigh up to five times heavier than snow. Both elements add significant weight to the overall load the roofing structure is designed to support. An experienced roofer says that the weight of snow and ice increases the threat of roof leaks and collapse.

When to Remove Snow From Your Roof

If your roof is prone to ice dams, consider removing snow after six inches have accumulated. If your only concern is excess weight from the snow, then you may start the removal after a foot and a half to two feet of snow has accumulated.
