How to Tell if It’s Time to Replace Your Skylight

A well-kept skylight offers a lot of benefits, including letting natural light into your home and providing a beautiful view of the outdoors. But how can you tell if it’s finally time to call a residential roofing contractor to replace your current unit? Here are a few warning signs:

  • Old age: While different models of skylights come with varying lifespans, the general rule to follow is that they need replacement every 10 years. If your home or building is around that age, it’s worth having your skylights checked by a specialist.
  • Cracks on the glass: Cracks on the glass are an obvious indication that your skylight needs to be replaced sooner rather than later. Cracks start out small, but they can end up taking over the entire surface area of the skylight over time, allowing water to seep into your interior space.
  • Leaks: If your skylight is leaking, you definitely need to call a roofer. Although skylights act as windows, they’re still part of the roof. And, if elements are being allowed through, then you have a big problem that needs to be addressed. Don’t wait for your wall paint to peel or mold to grow before you start taking the issue seriously.
  • Condensation: If you notice condensation buildup in or around your skylight, this is typically a sign that there’s an issue with the sealant of the window unit. If this is left unchecked for a long time, it can lead to the entire roofing system needing to be replaced down the line, which is not only time-consuming to undertake, but also expensive.
