Bathroom Layout Do’s and Don’ts

To pull off a successful bathroom remodeling project, a functional floor layout is a must. To begin planning your bathroom design, you should first determine where doors, windows and other elements should be located. You should also work out how to organize your bathroom space.

To help you with this task, today we share the do’s and don’ts of creating a bathroom layout.

Bathroom Layout Do’s

  • Divide Your Floor Into Dry and Wet Zones

Divide the bathroom into wet and dry zones, which will serve as the basis of your bathroom layout. Water-based activities, like bathing and showering, take place in the wet zone, so this area should include the shower, bath and spa. Meanwhile, the dry zone includes the vanity, storage and toilet. The division of the room into these two key areas separates the two types of activities, preventing water in areas where you don’t want it. If your bathroom is small, installing a cavity sliding door will provide more privacy in the dry zone and create more space, making your bathroom appear less cluttered.

  • Proper Lighting Placement

Having different lighting styles in different areas is better because each type of lighting fixture is usually intended for specific purposes. A soft, dimmable light or a natural skylight above the bath/spa and shower will help create a relaxing atmosphere, while lights on either side of the mirror will brighten the face and eliminate shadows for cosmetic application and facial grooming.

  • Include Storage Space

The best way to add storage to your bathroom is to use space that would otherwise be wasted. Consider the following storage ideas for your bathroom: a shelf over the toilet, drawers under the vanity, niches in partition walls in the shower and an over-basin mirror that also functions as a small cabinet.

If your bathroom doesn’t have a lot of floor space, consider a tall, narrow shelf or cabinet that you can hang on the wall or put on the floor. This type of storage can keep everything you need without taking up too much space. You can install a mirror on the door or place a mirror in front of it, so you can make your bathroom feel bigger and help conceal the storage.

Bathroom Layout Don’ts

  • Getting Incorrect Measurements

The most common cause of a bad bathroom layout is incorrect measurement. One thing to remember is to consider how far the door is from the sink. You should make sure that your bathroom door doesn’t hit the toilet every time you open it. Measure everything twice or even thrice to make sure you don’t make a mistake.

  • Overlooking the Flooring

It’s easy to forget about the flooring in your bathroom, but it’s a big part of the room where you can make a statement. Floors are now called the “fifth wall”. Patterned floor tiles with big, bold prints will make your bathroom stand out and bring life to the space.
