Powder rooms are essentially half-bathrooms and are generally among the smallest rooms in any home. Getting the most out of such a small space, while ensuring style and functionality, can seem like a tall order, but it’s far from impossible. In today’s post, Ben’s Construction Inc. shares tips on how to maximize the space in a powder room.
Choose Wall-Mounted Fixtures
Floor-mounted fixtures have a relatively larger footprint that can take up quite a bit of bathroom real estate, which can be a lot in a powder room. Choosing wall-mounted versions of just the two key fixtures — the toiled and the sink — can make a big difference. Not only would the increased floor area make the bathroom look bigger, it makes it easier to clean and maintain.
Wall-mounted fixtures present some challenges that should be weighed against its benefits. One is the plumbing. If you’re switching from floor-mounted fixtures, significant changes will need to be made to the existing plumbing, which can drive the remodeling cost a little bit. Another is the tilework: the greater the floor area, the more tiles and labor will be needed.
Install a Pocket Door
A pocket door is a sliding door that tucks into the wall when opened, eliminating the need for the swing space required by a traditional hinged door. Like wall-mounted fixtures, a pocket door won’t be a straight swap. The adjoining wall may need to be modified to accommodate the door and its mechanism. The wall itself should be wide enough to allow a perfect fit. Alternatively, consider a barn door if changes to the wall are not an option.
Floating Storage
Floating shelves and cabinets work much like floor-mounted fixtures: they free up floor space and make the bathroom less cluttered. Additionally, consider utilizing as much of the vertical space as you can. Overhead cabinets can be used for bathroom supplies that aren’t used everyday, as well as keep things like shaving razors and electrical items out of your kids’ reach. Your bathroom remodeler can help you design overhead cabinets that won’t make the bathroom look cramped.
