Mold and mildew can grow on surfaces that are subjected to a regular supply of moisture, especially if those surfaces have some shade. Mold and mildew are a problem because they affect aesthetics and they can also cause health problems, such as allergic reactions, asthma flareups and other health concerns. While removing them is possible, it’s an unpleasant task that you’d rather avoid.
To prevent mold and mildew from growing on your siding, here are some tips.
Clean Your Siding Regularly
Every few months, pick up your garden hose and a soft-bristled brush, and clean your siding. You might not have mold on your property, but mold spores are airborne so they can start growing on your home without warning. Cleaning your siding helps remove them immediately.
You can also use a mold-resistant cleaner to extend the time between cleanings. However, the mold-resistant cleaner will not stop mold growth forever, so be sure to clean your siding at least a few times a year.
Let Sunlight Do Its Job
Trim any trees or shrubs that protect your siding from sun exposure as well as limit air circulation. Mold and mildew like dark and damp areas. Exposing your siding to sunlight can prevent their growth. In addition to tree and shrub trimming, get rid of climbing vines that make their way to your siding. Moss is another growth that you should remove.
Clean and Maintain Your Rain Gutters
Clogged, loose, broken or missing sections of gutter will lead to spilling water, which doesn’t do anything to protect your home from water damage, including mold growth. Make sure your gutters are free of clogs caused by leaves, branches, pine needles, animal carcasses and nests, and other debris. Trimming nearby trees will minimize debris buildup in your gutters. Think about installing a gutter protection system, as well.
Prevent Sprinklers From Spraying Your Siding
Don’t allow sprinklers to get your siding wet. Wet siding is a perfect surface for breeding mold and mildew. If you water your lawn with a garden hose, spray in directions away from your siding.
